Movie Review: Woodlawn

Quick Plot Summary: True story of a football team of a racially-integrated school in Birmingham, Alabama in the 1970's.

Rating: Great
Suggested Ages: 10+

This unapologetically Christian film tells the true story of a high-school football team in Birmingham, Alabama as it underwent racial-integration in the 1970's and how they went on to surprise everyone... Basically it highlights the incredible racial tensions that existed at the time and shows how the love of Jesus was able to heal those divisions and bring people together. If you know any of the history of Birmingham in the story of racial inequality in the United States, you can appreciate how big of a deal this was. This movie is a powerful testimony to the love of Jesus!

The production quality of the film is quite high and actor Sean Astin (of "Rudy" and "Lord of the Rings" fame) does a pretty good job playing an evangelist sharing the good news message of God's love. This is a well-made and well-acted film.

And I love the song played at the end which is basically a modern version of the old 1970's song: "They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love". The Church today needs that reminder!
